Hedy Lamarr
Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-born American film actress and inventor who became a film star during Hollywood's golden age. In addition to her successful film career, Lamarr was also an inventor who, during World War II, co-developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes with composer George Antheil. This system used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. The idea was later patented by Lamarr under her married name, Hedy Kiesler Markey. Although the U.S. Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi. In recognition of her pioneering work, Lamarr was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
